What Are ‘Petri Dish’ Dice?
‘Petri dish’ dice feature sinking ink in the resin and is achieved by using a sinker medium. If the sinker is not used, you will get a smokey effect as the ink disperses in the resin. It is named ‘petri dish’ because of the mold appearance that occurs on the bottom of the die face; it’s almost like mold growing on a petri dish used in biology labs.
It is generally considered a more difficult effect to achieve in resin art, unless you know exactly the right combo of ingredients and directions. This is due to the common issue of the ink and/or sinker causing the resin not to cure properly. It took me six months, even with watching tutorials, to crack the code for myself. I’m still trying to fine tune the depth of the ink tendrils created by this effect, but the time spent experimenting is worth it to achieve these beautiful results.
